The movie “Enchanted” opens in the animated land of Andalasia. In this very Disney fairy tale setting a young girl named Giselle ( voiced by Amy Adams) meets the prince of her dreams, Prince Edward (voiced by James Marsden). This animated part of the film is a dead on mix of classic Disney, borrowing liberally from Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Cinderella.
The animation comes to a close as Giselle is banished from the animated kingdom to live-action modern day New York City by Prince Edward’s evil step-mother Queen Narissa (voiced by Susan Sarandon).

I know what your thinking “Cmon, how do you transport a Disney princess to the modern world?” This is where the movie falls apart, right? Wrong, in fact the film just picks up steam. This is mostly due to the straight faced performances of Adams and Marsden, who never drop out of character or giving a knowing smirk. Watching the trailer I assumed this would be a fish out of water story. But the opposite is true - instead we see the modern world get a healthy splash of magic in its face.
I was happily surprised by this, but I wasn’t sure this could suspend my disbelief, but by the end of the first musical number, “The Happy Working Song” - mission accomplished. I was laughing out loud and was completely lost in the film.
Not convinced? Check out the musical number “That’s How You Know”. Awesome!
For those who have not seen it, I don’t want to give anything away in the review. But I will tell you, although the CGI will get pretty intense and a little “kid scary” the ending will leave you smiling. Never forget this is a “Disney Fairy Tale” in the truest sense of the term.
THE DVD
I just got through watching the DVD and the movie holds up really well on the small screen and it looks great on my standard DVD player (of course it is also coming out on Blue Ray). This being a Disney DVD, it is chock full of extras, including:
- Pip’s Predicament: A Pop-up Adventure: Giselle’s chipmunk friend Pip stars in this new short—magical pop-up, storybook style. While Giselle gets used to life in New York, Pip embarks on a daring mission to rescue Prince Edward.
- Fantasy Comes to Life: Discover the cinematic wizardry that went into the making of Enchanted in three behind-the-scenes featurettes: “Happy Working Song,” “That’s How You Know,” “A Blast at the Ball”
- Deleted Scenes: Including exclusive introductions by director Kevin Lima
- Bloopers

I personally loved the film. I thought it really brought back the classic feel of both live action Disney films and the animated masterpieces.
I also think the use of pulling from so many classic Disney films as hints , characters, scenes etc was brilliant. I am picking this one up today!
