Sad to say that VMK, the online Magic Kingdom is closing its doors for good at the end of day on May 21st, 2008. This come straight from the mouth of Yavn.
As many of you know, Virtual Magic Kingdom was created and launched back in 2005 as part of the Disneyland 50th Anniversary Celebration. VMK exceeded expectations in terms of performance, and as a result we extended the promotion (that is, VMK, the game) well beyond the 50th Celebration.
Eventually though, all promotions must come to an end, so I’m announcing today that on May 21, 2008, VMK will open our virtual gates for the last time. You read that right: VMK was never intended to last forever – we’ll close the game for good at the end of day on May 21st, 2008.
This is not an April Fool’s joke.
Now we understand this news may be upsetting to you but let me explain. Again, VMK was launched as part of Disneyland’s 50th Celebration in 2005 and the game has lived well beyond the originally intended time it was planned to run.
Over time you’ve seen our in-Park presence and other parts of VMK go away. You may remember our V.I.P Tours at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, or our in-Park Quest. We didn’t stop doing those things because we don’t love the game or our Guests, but because the time to run those promotions ended.
At Disney we’re still committed to building communities and online virtual worlds – and we’re looking forward to providing you the opportunity to enjoy other exciting new experiences.
Don’t look at VMK ending as a bad thing – think of it as a new beginning, a chance to explore something fresh and new! Think of it like school: You don’t want to leave your old friends, but still, the time has come to graduate and move onto another great adventure.
In the time since we’ve launched VMK, we’ve seen many players come and go, and we’re hoping you will graduate from VMK too – in particular, to games like Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Disney’s ToonTown Online, Club Penguin and the upcoming Fairies and Cars online virtual worlds. We think you’ll find you enjoy those just as much as VMK – if not more.
I am sad to see it go, but as a fan of games and the web I know nothing lasts forever. VMK will be missed.

Agreed. I thought it would only grow as time went on. NO fair that they close VMK and DCA still stays open.

I still don’t understand why VMK left! If VMK exceeded expectations, then why couldn’t it have stayed? There were more than 200,000 players in VMK, and I feel like I would never like anything else ever again! Everyone kept telling me that VMK would come back, but I knew they were wrong. I am SuperStarAce ( my main VMK name ) and although I wasn’t with VMK until about October 2006, I loved and knew it by heart! VMK was NOT just a useless little computer game, it taught me how to type so fast at the ageof 9!!!!! It letme explore more and more things! And I will never forget VMK. Hence, VMK has also taught me a lesson. If you explore your world, you can find exciting and overwhelming things! VMK really WILL be missed. It’s just so different, not playing VMK! I miss Pirates of the Carribean, I miss my collection of rare trunks and hats, and I will KEEP CHECKING VMK IN CASE OF ANY SUDDEN CHANGES!!!!! VMK is in my heart and soul, and though I’m not the best player ever, I haven’t won any rewards or anything, it taught me how to really have fun, and I hope that the makers or founders of VMK read this and know that your used-to-be player, SuperStarAce, Ashlera, sharprince, AstroCross, and more names of my virtual avatars, absoulutely loves you no matter how frustrated you got me at times. And now that I know the truth, I can go on with life knowing that I had great times in VMK, maybe even bad. I am very sorry if you got bored reading this extremely long message, but VMK has really touched me in these past times. I love you all who knew of VMK, worked for VMK, created VMK, founded VMK, played VMK, etc., etc., etc.. I love you, 10-year-old, SuperStarAce.***

Well said SuperStarAce.
We can keep hoping, even though it seems unlikely. Maybe it is time to start asking for VMK 2.0.
